How to Play Music Around the Entire House with Sonos
We have an iPad that is preprogrammed with all the essentials to control music around the house. It will be out on the kitchen counter but ask your butler if not. iPad Passcode: 1234
There are Sonos Speakers in every room and common space that you are able to play music from with the ability to group them or play separate music on each.
If you want to use your phone, download Spotify, or any streaming service of your choice on your phone, and, if you have an iPhone, airplay to a single speaker or zone, or download the Sonos app which will give you much more flexibility. To use all of the features of the Sonos app, you will need to make an account here
For our example today, we’re using our iPad that has Spotify and the Sonos app already set up, but steps are the same on a phone
On the iPad, navigate to Spotify app and choose a song of your liking. We have a few CTJ playlists here as well in “Your Library” if you don’t want to think, just play some good music curated by the owners.
Once you are playing a song, click the small speaker logo that is circled in red
Once the speaker icon is clicked, you receive options on which room you want to play music in. The top most one is a group os speakers predefined by the last person using the Sonos system, in this case Kitchen Ceiling +4 (zones) means The Kitchen Ceiling is grouped with other speakers such as Living Room, etc.
Choose one to get the music started in the Sonos system, adjust the volume with the slider below, and let’s move to the Sonos app to gain more control over individual volumes of rooms, zones, and where you want to play it exactly
If you are unsure of which room is what according the Sonos zone names, your butler can assist you but most should be self explanatory
When you open the Sonos App on the iPad (or your phone), it’ll look like this
Click the icon to the right of the pause icon in the bottom right and an overview of every speaker thats available to play from in the house will be there, alongside volume sliders and preselected groups by previous guests or your party.
Full Sonos guide is here to explain every button and option available on the app
Here you can now scroll through all the zones and speakers available in our house. If you click the icon that is circled red it will pull up a screen where you can start to group certain speakers together to play the same music. Within that, it’ll show all the options of speakers available to group and their individual volumes. You may adopt speakers from other groups in this screen (below right) as well, just click apply when done
Once music is playing, everyone connected to the wifi of the house (BOLONGO 123) can adjust and play the music from their own phone, granted you have the Sonos app and Spotify downloaded on your phone. Spotify has a cool feature called “jams” where you can connect to someone else’s “jam” and add songs from your own Spotify to the queue. Learn more about Spotify jams here but if you have Spotify you will be alerted to join if you have a Spotify account on your phone
Sonos admittedly can be confusing and their app this year has become increasingly buggy. The iPad is pretty stable though. If you are on your phone and trying to adjust zone and volumes and it is not working, just keep the app open for a bit until it updates to your liking or what you intended it to do. The music is worth it once you master how the system works. So again, you have the option of using the iPad exclusively or to use your phone or a mixture of both
If you still need help, ask our butler who can guide you to further assistance
This is the Sonos Move you see as one of the speakers, it is on the kitchen counter charging and able to be taken around the house or outside as an extra. Please don’t place it in the sand but its intended purpose is to be used, for example, as an extra speaker to play music by our outdoor dining table
If you are in your room or simply want to use one speaker and don’t want to download the Sonos app, etc, as long as that speaker isn’t grouped into someone else’s music playing and you have an iphone, Airplay is the simplest method and you can stream literally anything that is playing audio on your phone
Follow along here or click airplay from the options within speaker selections on Spotify (usually at the bottom of the list)
